A new reading in the subscriptio of Philodemus’ first book On Rhetoric
di Eleni Avdoulou, Graziano Ranocchia pagine: 7 € 6,00
Abstract
This paper offers a new reading in the subscriptio of P.Herc. 1427, which represents the mi- dollo of the papyrus roll containing the first book of Philodemus’ On Rhetoric. By applying recent high-resolution digital microscopy, this study argues that the correct reading of the third line of the subscriptio is the genitive plural of the enigmatic term ὑπομνηματικόν. This confirms that P.Herc. 1427 is the very first ὑπομνηματικόν or ‘hypomnematic book’ in a series of subsequent ὑπομνηματικά of the same treatise.

I colori dei farmaci antichi: l’‘impiastro grigio Egizio’ nella letteratura medica e in un ricettario su papiro
di Anna Monte pagine: 14 € 6,00
Abstract
This article presents an analysis of the ancient literary and papyrological sources for a particular kind of medical plaster, called ‘Egyptian grey plaster’ (φαιὰ Αἰγυπτία). Galen quotes three main versions of this recipe, the most popular of which was ascribed to the physician Andromachus the Younger. A recently published papyrus (P.Egerton 13 verso) provides a new papyrological testimony of the Egyptian grey plaster, which will be discussed in relation to the ancient medical literature in order to trace the origin and transmission of this recipe.
La tabella 25 dell’archivio di Locri e il “tormento” della scelta sul basileus
di Andrea Filocamo pagine: 18 € 6,00
Abstract
In identifying the basileus mentioned in the tables of Locri, table 25 appears particularly problematic, whether one considers the basileus to be a Hellenistic sovereign or a civic ma- gistrate. In this work, after reiterating that the old prejudices against the hypothesis of the basileus as a Hellenistic sovereign have no reason to exist, a critical analysis is conducted on the thesis of the basileus as a magistrate: the argument for the use of the term basileus without a proper name, the one which identifies it as rex sacrorum, as well as the compari sons with other poleis, appears weak. Finally, an interpretation of table 25 is proposed, con- sistent with the identification of the basileus as a foreign sovereign: the sanctuary simply attributes as a loan made to the city the ninth that the latter has improperly paid to the basi leus, taking it away from the sanctuary.
New Insights into Female Literacy in Graeco-Roman and Late Antique Egypt: Rare Words in Women’s Letters
di Marianna Thoma pagine: 29 € 6,00
Abstract
This paper examines female literacy in Greco-Roman and Late Antique Egypt through the lens of the rare vocabulary found in women’s private letters. By analysing the rich corpus of women’s letters, the paper highlights linguistic patterns, word choices and stylistic features that shed light on the educational background and social status of female writers in Egypt. The women’s pagan or Christian backgrounds, which may have influenced their reading interests, are also considered. The study challenges traditional assumptions about women’s literacy and contributes to the ongoing discourse on the relationship between li teracy and socio-economic status in antiquity. These findings contribute to a more nuanced understanding of female literacy and epistolary practices in antiquity.
The Use of Ancient Greek Authors in Graeco-Roman Schools: Ancient Greek Concepts and Moral Education
di Konstantinos Efthymiou pagine: 32 € 6,00
Abstract
This study examines the role of classical education in Graeco-Roman schools, focusing on the moral purpose of literary passages used as school exercises. By compiling a corpus of school texts from thirty-two editions of papyri and related writing materials, this research explores the selection of passages that express ancient Greek concepts, such as φιλία – φι- λοξενία and/or address ethical matters, like μεσότης. The findings highlight the significance of these texts in shaping students’ intellectual and moral development, illustrating how classical literature provided a foundation for ethical instruction in ancient education. The impact of moral education is particularly evident in the rhetorical style and literary references found in non- literary texts, especially private letters, which reflect the deep assimilation of ancient Greek ideas and values.

Echi di motivi letterari egizi di epoca classica e tolemaica in Leonida
di Anna Sofia pagine: 12 € 6,00
Abstract
Throughout this paper the author illustrates interesting similarities in the development of several literary motifs between the production of Leonidas of Tarentum and some papyro logical and epigraphic texts survived from Pharaonic and Ptolemaic Egypt. In particular, she focuses on the topic of the exile far from the native land (Leonidas 93 G.-P.), on the poetic description of the fishermen’s tools and everyday life (Leonidas 52 G.-P.), on the grief for an untimely death (Leonidas 98 G.-P.). Themes similar to these are developed in the Tale of Sinuhe, in P.Puškin (The pleasures of fishing and fowling) and in P.Sallier (Satire of trades), as well as in epigraphic texts from Ptolemaic Egypt (e.g., in the stela of Isetemakhe- bit). A comparison between the imperative form φεύγετε at the beginning of Leonidas’ epigram 37 G.-P. and a similar formula attested in the incipit of an Egyptian spell (P.Berlin 3027), used to expel a nocturnal bad creature, leads the author to postulate a direct influence of Egyptian magic on Leonidas’ poetry.

I sarcofagi di Telesforo (Firenze, 2165) e Chelidonia (Louvre, 2576)
di Antonio Panetta pagine: 18 € 6,00
Abstract
At the end of the Franco-Tuscan Expedition, the two commissions divided equally the arte facts found during joint excavations. The coffins of Telesforo (Firenze, Museo Egizio, inv. no. 2165) and of Chelidonia (Louvre, inv. N. 2576) became two disiecta membra: conser ved in two different Egyptian collections. The object of the paper is therefore to shed light on the history of their discovery and their arrival in the current museum collections of Florence and Paris. The author draws to the attention many elements in common between the two specimens on the basis of iconographic analysis. Both can be defined as Graeco-Roman coffins and dated between the end of the II and the early III century A.D. Furthermore, it is hypothesized, through letters sent by Champollion and Rosellini’s writings, that the two wooden coffins come from the same Theban area excavated in 1829.
