In identifying the basileus mentioned in the tables of Locri, table 25 appears particularly problematic, whether one considers the basileus to be a Hellenistic sovereign or a civic ma- gistrate. In this work, after reiterating that the old prejudices against the hypothesis of the basileus as a Hellenistic sovereign have no reason to exist, a critical analysis is conducted on the thesis of the basileus as a magistrate: the argument for the use of the term basileus without a proper name, the one which identifies it as rex sacrorum, as well as the compari sons with other poleis, appears weak. Finally, an interpretation of table 25 is proposed, con- sistent with the identification of the basileus as a foreign sovereign: the sanctuary simply attributes as a loan made to the city the ninth that the latter has improperly paid to the basi leus, taking it away from the sanctuary.
