This article presents an analysis of the ancient literary and papyrological sources for a particular kind of medical plaster, called ‘Egyptian grey plaster’ (φαιὰ Αἰγυπτία). Galen quotes three main versions of this recipe, the most popular of which was ascribed to the physician Andromachus the Younger. A recently published papyrus (P.Egerton 13 verso) provides a new papyrological testimony of the Egyptian grey plaster, which will be discussed in relation to the ancient medical literature in order to trace the origin and transmission of this recipe.
