This paper provides a new reading of abundantly quoted but not entirely read P.Ryl. II 189, allowing to determine who are the beneficiaries of the first set of public clothing required from the weavers of Socnopaiou Nesos, and what kind of garments is supplied. The usual meaning of the title “collectors of public clothing for the custodiae” is discussed, and an interpretation of what is called a monochiton is given, since this text provides the second evidence of that term as a substantive.
