Throughout this paper the author illustrates interesting similarities in the development of several literary motifs between the production of Leonidas of Tarentum and some papyro logical and epigraphic texts survived from Pharaonic and Ptolemaic Egypt. In particular, she focuses on the topic of the exile far from the native land (Leonidas 93 G.-P.), on the poetic description of the fishermen’s tools and everyday life (Leonidas 52 G.-P.), on the grief for an untimely death (Leonidas 98 G.-P.). Themes similar to these are developed in the Tale of Sinuhe, in P.Puškin (The pleasures of fishing and fowling) and in P.Sallier (Satire of trades), as well as in epigraphic texts from Ptolemaic Egypt (e.g., in the stela of Isetemakhe- bit). A comparison between the imperative form φεύγετε at the beginning of Leonidas’ epigram 37 G.-P. and a similar formula attested in the incipit of an Egyptian spell (P.Berlin 3027), used to expel a nocturnal bad creature, leads the author to postulate a direct influence of Egyptian magic on Leonidas’ poetry.
